Burdock Root contains polyacetylenes that gives the herb its possible antibacterial and antifungal properties. It is used to support bowel health and aids in the elimination of uric acid. It is classified as an alterative diuretic and diaphoretic. It may support kidney health, filtering out impurities from the blood very quickly. It may support the body's ability to clear congestion in respiratory, lymphatic, urinary and circulatory systems. Burdock also supports healthy digestion as well as liver and gallbladder health.
The main constituents of Dandelion Root are taraxacin, a crystalline which is a bitter substance where the yield varies in roots collected at different seasons. The root contains no starch, but early in the year contains much non crystallizable sugar and laevulin, which differ from Inulin in being soluble in cold water. This diminishes in quantity during the summer and becomes Inulin in the autumn. In the fresh root, the Inulin is present in the cell sap, but in the dry root it occurs as an amorphous, transparent solid, which is only slightly soluble in cold water, but soluble in hot water. There is a difference of opinion as to the best time for collecting the roots. If collected in autumn the root will be more bitter than the spring root. Due to its bitter qualities Dandelion is traditionally used to nourish the liver and kidneys and supports a healthy detoxification response.
Red Clover is considered an alternative, or antiscorbutics, which is traditionally known to support the body's ability to correct impure conditions of the blood and may steadily tone up organs; which may not be able to secrete impurities from the blood. It is because of this action that Red Clover is traditionally considered a "blood purifier".
The active constituent of peppermint, found in the leaves and flowering tops, is menthol and is the alcoholic component responsible for the plant’s characteristic quality to produce a cooling sensation, as well as its medicinal properties. The presence of various esters, particularly menthyl acetate, impart the familiar minty aroma and flavor so familiar to use. One of its paradoxes is that it is both a stimulant and a relaxant. peppermint is predominantly stimulating to the circulation yet soothing to the nerves, thus having both qualities at once. Peppermint is well known for its antispasmodic action to relieve nervous irritability and reduce or prevent muscle spasms
Licorice is one of the more widely consumed herbs in the world. In Traditional Chinese Medicine it occurs in more formulas than any other single herb because it is thought to harmonize the action of all other herbs. The major active component of licorice is saponin known as glycyrrhizin, also known as glycyrrhizic acid, which is an extremely sweet, foaming triterpene glycoside. Glycyrrhiza consists mainly of 20% starch, up to 6.5% glucose, 2 - 4% asparagines, 8% fat, resins, mannitol, gum protein, a trace of tannin, .03% volatile oils, bitter principles and other constituents.
Yellow dock has a long history of use as an alternative herb. Alterative herbs have nonspecific effects on the gastrointestinal tract and liver. As a result, they are thought to support healthy skin conditions that are attributed to toxic metabolites from poor digestion and poor liver function. It is also thought to support healthy bile production and can be used as a digestive bitter.
Ginger is probably best known to support healthy digestion. It effectiveness in this area is so impressive that if this was ginger’s only virtue, it would be worth its weight in gold on this point alone. However, this spectacular root is also known for its ability to support healthy healthy circulation.
